„How Green Was Our Valley“: Journey in Canavese, 10 Years Later
„We could spend this day in the shopping mall or try to make business contacts around some city. Instead, no, but this is more beautiful. How many times do we let our heart do what it desires, what it asks for?
We embark on this journey at a significant moment, retracing the paths of the past where we started a family. We are more mature now, aware that life doesn’t wait, so we decide to live in the present moment with courage. We have chosen to revisit some places from our past, a sort of journey to our former place of residence where we lived for 13 years.
„The Journey on the Lake of Time“
We immediately thought of staying at Lake Viverone, a place sometimes magical and often tranquil, where we used to stroll with our little son, where we ate in a fishery under a small church, and took walks back and forth around the lake. This first visit to this place after 10 years – our son Matteo is now 20 years old – was very emotional and melancholic.
The tears hidden behind a smile, the sighs lost in the fresh February air, were part of an emotional dance that would accompany us throughout the journey, making every moment even more precious and intense.
Weather alsocontributed to this, there was only a beautiful sun, still wintry, but with the residual warmth of an imminent spring, a classic mid-February.The walk along the lake’s banks, between the pier and our silent steps, transported us into memories. A period lived long ago, resurfacing like those few grey herons diving underwater in search of invisible fish.
Nature here is still somewhat unspoiled, with the majestic yet small Serra mountain range, a pre-Alpine hill, distributing rigorous vineyards along its gentle slopes. The flat and silent lake, the few people strolling, a small restaurant offering a simple lunch at modest prices, as only in Italy they know how to do, with a small but homely kitchen.
Small or big things?
On the other hand, the joy of seeing this place again after so long resurfaced forcefully, I constantly revisited our moments lived in these places, the memory of our friends, those who are here, some of whom we will see in these days, and those who are no longer with us.
The second stop was in San Giorgio and San Giusto Canavese, where we lived. It was strange to revisit the places I know by heart, the streets, the shops, places where we took our child for the first time, the gardens, the playgrounds, the small soccer field in front of the house, the bars, the restaurants where we spent time, sometimes futile but often pleasant and generous in conversations among friends and colleagues.
Every corner of these little villages guarded secrets and memories that only our hearts could understand, weaving an invisible yet indissoluble bond between past and present.
Our place of work
The third and final moment was even more difficult, full of melancholy and sadness, visiting the ruined television studios where we worked, the broken windows, the abandoned hotel, the dilapidated swimming pool, the now overgrown parking lot, as if we were novices in urbex, where every day we crossed the gates, arrived with tenacity and passion to meet various friends, colleagues, to create a show full of emotions, followed by millions of people every day.
Our journey in Canavese was much more than a simple journey back in time. It was a journey that reminded us of the value of family, friendship, and the bond with the place we once called home. But our home remains nevertheless, here are the roots of our son, perhaps one day he will decide to rediscover them and appreciate this fortune of belonging to two cultures. Today he speaks Czech and Italian.
Family
We haven’t seen so many flowers bloom, so many waves break in these 10 years. The little boats continue to sway in their innocent splendor without us. Melancholy, gratitude, a bit of sadness, but everything has already passed. This lake perfectly reflects our mood. Family. The greatest investment in life. Family means everything in Italy.
